Located in Marius Street, the station was opened on 9 January 1882 when the existing railway line was extended from West Tamworth to Kootingal. Built in the Victorian Italianate design, it reflects the importance that was attached to Tamworth as a township and railway location during the development of the Great Northern Railway line during the 19th century.
